As with most of the best stories my shop’s origins are from an unexpected source, a gift.
I gave my son a gift, a set of crocheted finger puppets to bring stories to life; for nothing opens the imagination more than being able to feel and act out a story with your fingers. Then he began to requested things only a kid’s imagination would dream up, like octopus mittens where the tentacles would wrap around this thumb to keep him warm while he would play in the snow. Teachers and students in his school began to ask where he was getting winter hats that looked like our dogs. Once he told them his mom made them, other moms began asking for the patterns.
Then, as family and friends would visit my house a piece of art on the wall would make them stop, read and comment. A typographical representation of the Lord’s Prayer with its earthy color pallet made bright by the stoic gray wall behind it. Before I knew it, the desk in my studio was covered with printed out emails requesting other verses to be designed into cross-stitch patterns.
Without even knowing it, Snoflake Stitchery began when I gave my son a homemade gift. It was only through the support, encouragement and enthusiasm of family, friends and even strangers, Snoflake Stitchery was created; an Etsy shop selling simply unique crochet and cross-stitch patterns.
I am Sarah Richards.
To my parents I am still Sarah Jo.
I have lived at the Canadian border in Minnesota, in the bayous of Louisiana and on the rocky Atlantic coast of New England. I attended the University of Minnesota to study graphic design, and scientific & technical writing. While I am an award winning artist and designer, Snoflake Stitchery is where I exercise my talents in the creation of original cross-stitch and crochet patterns. In addition, I am the author of the Woodmere Trilogy and Yum! (Cooking Gluten, Dairy and Soy Free).
When I am not writing, drawing, or designing, I can be found roaming the woods near my house with my family and two dogs.
